November 12, 2024Truly a Grand Speaker!
The Grand Tower is more than just a new speaker from Usher Audio. As our newest flagship model, the Grand Tower represents the culmination of nearly 40 years of audio expertise. As such, it integrates Usher Audio’s most celebrated, award-winning technologies plus a few extras into one exquisite listening experience.
Lying beneath the elegant lines of the Grand Towers are the thickest, most rigid, most advanced cabinets of any Usher speaker ever built. Only a cabinet that has reduced its mechanical vibrations to an absolute minimum will be capable of allowing its drivers to do the talking and we are happy to have achieved that with the Grand Tower. One defining feature is its 3 separate enclosures per speaker. This means double thickness where the enclosures meet, further separated by special vibration absorbing pads to render moot any interference from other drivers. As with the rest of the Dancer Series, the Grand Towers cabinets are built of our proprietary layered wood cabinet construction held together with a special penetrating glue effectively creating multiple constrained layers for dramatically reduced cabinet resonances. Average thickness surpasses 50mm for the heavily braced subwoofer. The MTM array maintains the same thickness but adds and incredible 120mm thick contoured front baffle! Pure brass spikes root the massive cabinets to the ground to whilst not allowing vibrations to be transferred to or from the floor.
Uncovering the key to superlative diamond sound
Because of its extreme hardness and excellent thermal conductivity diamond has always been considered an excellent material for
loudspeaker diaphragms. Tweeters with a diaphragm made of synthetic diamond, from the CVD (chemical vapor deposition) method have been around for quite some time. At Usher , we saw the promise of diamond as an ideal diaphragm material, but we also realized it would take some original thinking and an innovative approach to the engineering in order to bring out the best of this unusual material for application in audio.
Today after years of research we are pleased to present our exciting result the new Usher Diamond DMD series loudspeakers.
A perfect mix: An Usher Diamond dome has a proprietary metal alloy base layer with an amorphous diamond carbon layer on both sides.
The DMD Midrange Driver
Diamond is almost a perfect material as driver diaphragm except for its high density (thus high mass) and brittleness. The few “Diamond” drivers that have been on the market all suffer badly from these two issues. Usher was the first, and still the only, to have solved these problems by inventing the DMD diaphragm, in which a super light metal base is sandwiched by amorphous diamond layers, resulting in a durable, light, fast, high-resolving and thus hugely musical tweeter: the Usher DMD tweeter.
Now, after years of rigorous research and experiments, Usher has finally successfully implemented the DMD technology on the 5” midrange driver. This allows the music to be reproduced, from 385Hz up, completely by the amazing DMD drivers the result has to be heard to believe.
